Don’t Flush These Items Down Your Toilets

Did you know that one of the most frequent plumbing related service calls that we receive each week is to repair clogged toilets? Unless you’re having a serious sewer related issue, chances are high that your clogged toilet could have easily been avoided. The bottom line is that the vast majority of clogged toilets are caused by items that people flush that they’re not supposed to. When your toilet is clogged it’s a complete inconvenience to everyone in the house or the building. However, there’s another aspect that most people don’t think about.

A clogged toilet can cause significant and extensive damage to your entire plumbing system. It can even cause waste, waste materials and waste water to back up out of the toilet and into your bathroom. Whenever you have a clogged toilet, the best thing you can do is contact us immediately. We will come to your home or building and take care of the issue before it gets any worse. So, what are the things that you’re not supposed to flush down your toilet, but many people do? Coming in at number one on the list is baby wipes and disposable diapers.

These products are not designed to flush down your toilet. They are made to throw out in the trash. That being said, you may want to use a dedicated trash barrel in order to avoid unpleasant scents from invading your home. The bottom line is that baby wipes and disposable disappears do not break down in water. If you flush them, your toilets will suffer from major clogs and the drainline will be blocked. That means whatever else you flush simply won’t go down the toilet and into the sewer pipes.

Feminine hygiene products are on the same level as baby wipes and disposable diapers. For example, both tampons and sanitary napkins absorb liquid. That means they actually expand in water instead of breaking down. Flushing tampons and or sanitary napkins in the toilet is a big no-no. Another major thing not to flush down the toilet is cigarette butts. Although it may be tempting to dump an ashtray in the toilet, the filters are made with chemicals that pollute the water. You should also avoid flushing cotton balls, cotton pads and Q-tips down the toilet. Once again, these items do not break down and will clog your plumbing pipes.
